Bikes, School and Unemployement

by tns

So lately my life has consisted of what’s there in the title. It’s pretty nice, kind of tiring but it feels good to be busy fairly constantly. First quarter isn’t too hard due to some first year classes that don’t have much homework; that might get a little hairy once I have five subjects raining homework down on me. So far I’m doing fairly well in my classes with the only exception is English, which I might have at least a passing grade (I hope.)

Crank Puller

Since building my bike I’ve taken it on a few rides and such and gradually the thing has been making crazy noise. I pretty much narrowed it down to the bottom bracket, possibly loose or broken. I was going to borrow a tool from a friend but I realized I needed to buy a crank puller anyway since my cranks were stuck. Had I not bought the crank puller it probably would’ve taken me hours to take them off. I also went ahead and bought a bottom bracket adapter so I could remove/tighten the BB.

Bottom Bracket Adapter

I took apart the BB and re-greased everything and tighten it back up and lo and behold it was fixed. So it wasn’t broken (which was unlikely anyhow) and the crank puller literally yanked out my cranks in less than a minute. Pretty painless. So bike is running smooth. I’m kind of sad I have nothing else to add to it but maybe I should take a break from working on it and just ride it. Although I am tempted to hunt down a nice road bike frame to do a conversion project with…

Also, I am on unemployment, which is paying a lot more than I thought it was originally. Apparently I can collect for up to a year. Which is probably enough time for me to get situated at school and get a part time job; but I won’t be getting as much money. Right now I’m getting about $718 every two weeks. It has already paid for my bike and is paying for the rest of my other expenses. For the time being though, it is quite nice, so long as they do not catch on to me going to school and taking out loans.

This month I should also be able to purchase a new laptop with my student loan. I already had my heart set on one of the new macbooks; I don’t particularly need it but it was one of those things I’d probably end up buying anyway. So I’ll probably have another new toy by the end of the month.

Now the only thing I need is a more flexible schedule to go on more rides.
